ATV / UTV / OHV trail directory by state
Last updated: 2026-05-29
A state-by-state directory of 186 public-access ATV / UTV / OHV trail systems across 50 US states — state DNR trails, USFS Motor Vehicle Use Map designations, BLM OHV areas, private / membership trail authorities, and tribal-managed routes. Each entry links the trail-system source so you can confirm current status and permit requirements before riding.
Confirm status with the operating authority before each ride
A listing here is not a guarantee a trail is open today. Spring mud-out, wildfire, frost-heave, and post-storm closures override published season status. Verify with the linked trail-system source plus the state’s trail-pass calendar and federal Motor Vehicle Use Map for the unit you’re riding.
Trails by operating authority
OHV trails on public land are operated by one of five authority types. The authority controls permits, designation maps, seasonal closures, and enforcement.
State DNR
82 trails
State agency (DNR / parks / wildlife) runs the trail system. State OHV registration and any state trail pass cover access.
U.S. Forest Service
61 trails
USFS-managed motorized trails — Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) governs designated routes; state OHV registration plus any USFS-area fee or permit applies.
BLM
12 trails
BLM-managed OHV areas — open / limited / closed designations per the Resource Management Plan; state OHV registration applies on top of any BLM site permit.
Private / membership
31 trails
Private or membership-based trail authority — pay a permit at the trail. State OHV registration may still be required for legal operation.
Tribal
0 trails
Tribal-managed motorized trails — tribal OHV permit governs access; coordinate with the tribal office before riding.
Trail directory by state
Filter by public-land overlay to pivot the directory by land type. The state grouping is preserved — states with no matching trails drop out of view while the overlay is active. Land-type buckets marked “Mixed / not classified” collect entries whose land status can’t be determined from name alone (often state-DNR trail systems that span multiple land categories).

There is no equivalent state-operated ATV trail facility in Connecticut — practical ATV recreation in CT is restricted to private club land (NEMA-affiliated and county sportsmen's clubs) or out-of-state venues such as Pittsfield State Forest (MA) and the Adirondack OHV system (NY).

Plan to ride either private club lands within CT or cross state lines to MA (Pittsfield SF), NY, or RI / NJ note — both also limited (see those state pages).
